Interview with Tony Robles

Tony Robles was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. By today’s standards he was born to fail: Hispanic, living in poverty, abandoned by his father, his mother a high school dropout, crime-ridden neighborhoods, tough, segregated high school – and no affirmative action to help him out. But, Tony’s mother didn’t raise him to be a victim. She taught him that the keys to rising above poverty are education and hard work. Tony has lived the American Dream as his mother promised. He wishes she had survived to see his book, Joey Gonzalez, Great American. She would have loved it.

1. Why write this book?

The affirmative action mentality in America is poisoning the minds of black and Hispanic children, making them believe they need special preferences and cannot succeed on their own. My book, Joey Gonzalez, Great American gives parents a tool for combating that destructive mindset. The story encourages ethnic pride and self reliance, showing kids they have the potential to be great because they have the greatness of their ancestors inside them.

2. What was your favorite part of writing this book?

Working with Jimmy Pryor, the illustrator was the most enjoyable part of putting this book together. The process became a true collaboration. Jimmy suggested that I add text about the Buffalo Soldiers and he painted a beautiful portrait to illustrate it. We worked as a team deciding which parts of the story to illustrate. Jimmy is a great guy, a talented artist and a true professional. We have developed a strong friendship and we hope to work together on future projects.

3. What was most difficult?

Ironically the most enjoyable part was also the most challenging. Jimmy Pryor has always painted with oil and acrylic. For Joey Gonzalez, the publisher wanted watercolors. Jimmy learned to use watercolor by trial and error. It took a long time. When we came up against the deadline, Jimmy didn’t sleep for five days. I didn’t sleep much either. But it was all worth it. Jimmy’s skill, technique, and years of work with oil and acrylics resulted in beautifully detailed watercolors.

4. What is the one thing you’d like folks to know about this book or your work?

This book is my heart. Read it and you feel my passion. Jimmy Pryor put his own passion into the book through his collaboration and his artwork. We believe the message needs to get out to our kids. We believe Joey Gonzalez, Great American will resonate among the vast majority of black and Hispanic people who are frustrated by a prejudiced mentality that presumes they (and their children) are inherently inferior. This book is one they will enjoy reading to their children. As they read how Joey and his black schoolmates courageously proclaim their ethnic pride and self reliance, they may feel a little knot in the throat. That will be the passion coming through.

5. What’s next for you?

Right now my job is to get Joey Gonzalez to as many kids as possible.

Joey Gonzales: Great American by Tony Robles

How can I become a great American if I’m not an American in the first place?”

Third-grader Joey Gonzalez dreamed of becoming a great American. His plan? Study hard and learn everything he could. Then one day, his teacher said that because he was something called a “minority,” he wasn't smart enough to make his dream come true! Still, something called “affirmative action” could help him, she said…

But as Joey taps into the strength, intelligence and courage of his Spanish ancestors, he learns that personal pride, self-reliance and a love of learning—not special preferences—are the keys to becoming a good citizen…and a great American.

Lisa Samson Interview

Q. Discovering who you are is a major theme in Finding Hollywood Nobody. Scotty feels compelled to learn more about her real parents when she discovers that her ?mother? is really her grandmother and that her parents were likely killed in a mafia-style shootout. What do you think principally defines who we are ? genetics & family or how we see ourselves?

A. Being no expert in such things, I really couldn't say. There are way too many stories of twins separated at birth, growing up in very different homes, who end up living very similar lives. So I'd say genetics plays a large part. But just look and see what happens to people who are raised with many more advantages than those who aren't. So family as well as social standing hold a lot of sway as well. And then . . . how we see ourselves is a large part, especially how we see ourselves in light of God. Do we really believe God loves us? So can I answer yes to all three? I think we tend to get in trouble when we try and reduce the human psyche to one principle issue, anyway. As the Bible says, "we are fearfully and wonderfully made."

Q. What would you recommend to people in a similar situation as Scotty either through adoption or other circumstances? In your opinion - is finding your genetic heritage worth risking everything?

A. I wouldn't recommend anything! I think every situation is different and I would recommend commiting the matter of finding one's biological parent to intense prayer before even thinking of making a move. Let the Spirit guide above all else.

Q. What was your inspiration behind the Hollywood Nobody series?

A. I I just wanted to write a fun series. There are a lot of good series out there with teens in a more typical home situation, with either one parent around or two, living in a town, going to school, dealing with friends. But I wanted to remove my main character from the everyday world teens find themselves in and see what she did. I'm fascinated by what happens in Hollywood so setting it in that world, but on its edges, was something interesting for me. I swear, there are times I read what's happening to some of these young actresses and singers and can hardly believe my ears. I wanted to be able to explore a teenage girl's reaction to some of these foibles.

Q. What can you tell us about what?s in store for Scotty in Book 3?

A. Scotty finds some romance! As does Charley. And, of course, Seth "hottie" Haas, finds himself feeling a little threatened! The search for her mother continues full force. The book takes place in the mountains surrounding Asheville, North Carolina on the set of a Scottish epic film. Lots of guys in kilts. i'm just sayin'!

Finding Hollywood Nobody by Lisa Samson

Scotty Fitzgerald, oft-neglected daughter of well-known Hollywood food stylist Charley, knows the “inside scoop” about the Hollywood stars we can’t get enough of. Having spent her life in an RV driving from set to set while her mom “styled food” for celebrities, Scotty sees what the fans do not. And she reveals it regularly on her Hollywood Nobody blog, though she’d rather be as far away from Hollywood as anyone can get. After all, Scotty has enough drama in her own life!

After learning that her ‘mother’ is really her grandmother, Charley finds out her real parents were probably killed in a mafia-style shooting reminiscent of The Sopranos. Scotty’s now certain a sinister “Biker Guy” who’s continued to track her and her mom must be connected to her parents’ shooting. There’s a pretty good chance, she decides, that he’s looking to finish the job by taking her life.

So Scotty and Charley do what they’ve always done—run and avoid the situation. But a life on the run is exhausting and Scotty’s had just about enough—enough to ignore Charley’s motherly direction and chart her own course. Let’s just hope it isn’t a course that puts her in the crosshairs of her own parents’ murderer.

CFRB Presents: An Interview with Bill McGrath

1. What inspired you to write this story?

I began writing the story in 1981. A friend had called and told me about the storyline of the movie “Omen III, The Final Conflict,” which he had just seen. Typically of Hollywood at that time when handling a biblical subject, the story had very little to do with what’s actually in scripture regarding the Antichrist and the Second Coming of Christ.

I reacted both as a new Christian, “That’s not what the Bible says” and as a twenty year old guy, “I could write a better story than that.”

So that’s what I set out to do. I decided to set the story of the tribulation and Second Coming in a fantasy setting, figuring that non-Christians would be more likely to read a biblical story if written that way. I wrote on and off for the next few years, getting about 120,000 word done, but stopped writing when my father died in 1986.

I took up the story again in 2001 when my son was born. I wanted to write a story for him that brought together many of the things in the books I read as a teenager that gave me a life long love of reading and, I like to think, help point me in the right direction in life in general. What I envisioned as one book (The Sword of Fire) has now grown into three (Asulon, Eretzel and Apocalypse). The direct spark for my writing was to write a better story than The Omen, but the tinder, the fuel for my story was all the great books I read as a teen. Therefore, you’ll see influences in my story from authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Dante Alighieri, Edmund Rostand, Alexander Dumas, James Fennimore Cooper, Edgar Rice Boroughs, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Robert E. Howard.

2. Who is your favorite character and why?

I have a character in my story called Moor. He’s the hero’s Italian sword teacher. Moor is a combination of Mr. Spock, Sherlock Holmes and Machiavelli and gets to say and do things that us civilized folks can’t and there’s great satisfaction in that.

3. How have your personal faith and beliefs influenced your story?

When I was a child my whole family would sit together to watch biblical epics on TV such as The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur and Samson and Delilah. I was impressed with the movies themselves and with the fact that my father, who was not a very religious man at the time, would enjoy them along with the rest of us. When I began to write my story, I thought back to those larger than life movies and thought how they captured your imagination, how non-believers could suspend their disbelief and believe in those stories while they watched them. I wanted to write stories like that, Christian stories that non-Christians would enjoy.

4. What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Taking the story I see in my head (it looks like a movie to me) and putting it on a page so that the reader can both see what I see and enjoy the experience. In mundane terms, I also have trouble with basics like grammar and syntax. I often find myself slipping into what I call “Yoda speech” (in an effort to sound “classical” for a fantasy novel), but what my editor called “using the passive voice.” I went to school in the New York City public school system, so I was a bit weak on the basics when I began writing,(the minimum requirements for passing some of my classes were: 1. Show up 2. Don’t assault the teacher). I had to learn the basics of grammar and such as an adult through the many good books for writers available today.

5. What was easiest?

I have a pretty good imagination, so it’s easy for me to think up situations for my characters. Actually to say I “think up” things gives me too much credit. I believe having a good imagination is a talent like being able to sing or dance or draw well (none of which I can do by the way). I can no more take credit for having a good imagination than a singer can for having good vocal cords.

6. What's next for you?

I’m putting the finishing touches on book two now. Then I have to find a new editor (the editor for my first book is on maternity leave). I hope to have book two out this summer. Then I’ll begin book three.

CFRB Presents: Asulon by William McGrath

Summary (as found in A Frank Review)
A fantasy trilogy comprised of ASULON, ERETZEL & APOCALYPSE

The story begins in a society that resembles the western world during the decline of the Roman republic. Prince Daniel is driven from his homeland after his father is assassinated. Seeking safety, Daniel sails to the land of his maternal grandfather Anak. Anak is the last of the /Grigori/, a third group of angels who remained neutral during the war between the angels loyal to God and those rebelling with Lucifer. After the war, the Grigori were banished to the earth to live in mortal bodies. Anak's sons are the Anakim, giants unequaled in battle.

Traveling with Daniel are: Simon, a priest of the Lord Yeshua whose powers hint that he is more than a simple priest, and the Swordmaster Moor, Daniel's teacher and head of the king's bodyguards. Moor has sworn revenge on the powerful men who ordered the king's assassination. Also on the voyage is Rachel, a princess of the land of Eretzel and one whose songs carry healing gifts from God.

On the voyage Daniel and Rachel fall in love, but are later parted when Rachel's homeland is invaded. Working behind the scenes are philosophers, rich merchants and sorcerers, each moving to shape events to his own end. As old powers fall, new ones rise and the despotic Antiochus becomes Emperor of the West. The Anakim discover that the Magog, a people of the far north, have been breeding creatures that are half man and half beast for their use in war. The Anakim also discover how they themselves are linked to the terrible secret of these creatures' birth. The Magog plan an invasion of the gold rich Southlands, but Eretzel stands as a bridge to those lands and must be defeated first.

Buried far below the Great Temple in the capital city of Eretzel is the Sword of Fire, the weapon first used to guard the entrance to the Garden of Eden after the Fall of Man. Antiochus is searching for the sword. Daniel is told the secret to retrieving the sword and must keep this weapon out of the hands of Antiochus, less the dictator use it to bring all mankind under his control. Armed with the sword of fire, Daniel evades the men and creatures sent by Antiochus, while searching for Rachel throughout Eretzel and the lands that surround it.

The story ends with a battle between East and West in the valley of Megido, the return of the Lord Yeshua to rule the earth and a view of the first thirty days of the Millenial Kingdom.

Review of My Own Kind of Freedom by Steven Brust

I adore the FOX SF series Firefly. I found it refreshing and unique in its approach and voice. Where Gene Roddenberry tried to make "wagon train in space," and came up with something special but different, Joss Wheadon truly hit the mark with "the Wild West in space" with all its raw energy, unsanitized morality and excellent combination of genres. It quickly gained critical acclaim and an incredibly faithful fan base.

Sadly, FOX didn't see things the way reviewers and fans did, and they canceled the series after 13 short episodes. Of course, as with any good show, you can't totally kill it, and Firefly lives on in fanfict.

Thus comes Steven Brust's novel, My Own Kind of Freedom. Even the title is distinctively Firefly--and he lives up to the expectations it sets.
The crew of Serenity actually has a legal mission for once--delivering a load of lumber to a rich landowner on Hera names Sakaya. The planet, home of Serenity Ridge, where Mal and Zoe fought the fateful battle where the Browncoats at last lost the war, brings back unwelcome memories, but all they have to do is unload, get paid, buy a grav boot and go. Of course, nothing is easy for this crew.

Jayne gets caught stealing from one of their contacts and leaves the crew in a huff after refusing to return the merchandise. Naturally, his next step is to contact the Alliance and arrange to sell out River and Simon Tam. However, doing so interrupts a major sting operation the Alliance had planned on Sakaya, as the agent has to drop his work to meet Jayne. This suspicious behavior tips off Sakaya, who sends out hit men. Mal and Zoe immediately catch on to the hit men's intentions and step in. Too bad they didn't know the intended victim was an Alliance agent before they thwarted their plan. But when Kaylee sees the terrible condition of the people under Sakaya's thumb and Jayne gets arrested for drunk and disorderly and instead of bail gets indentured servitude as punishment, Mal and the crew find themselves helping the Alliance to bring Sakaya down. And if that weren't enough trouble, it turns out Sakaya is actually the Colonel who mentored Mal in his military career, pitting Mal's old loyalties against his own kind of morality.

All the fun you loved in Firefly, you'll find in My Own Kind of Freedom. The ironic humor, the general banter, the crazy antics, even the mix of Chinese and English--it's all there.

Steven has the characterization and dialog dead-to-rights. My favorites were Walsh and River. Not only did he get River's disjointed but perfectly sensical monologs correct, but he came up with very believable thought-processes to go with it. When you're dealing with a psychic driven insane by brain manipulation as well as the horrible secrets in her beyond-brilliant mind, that's an accomplishment. Walsh has his own unique brilliance and way of communicating, and Steven caught this too: an entire page of Walsh's thoughts as he flew Serenity into the planet's atmosphere, about the difficulty, the challenge, the glory, the complete lack of appreciation by the rest of the crew. Yet when Mal asks how entry went? "It's an entry. They're all the same."

Steven fills it with the same great action and humorous situations fans loved with Firefly--from Jayne's jail cell fiasco to Zoe breaking orders to follow Mal back planetside while everyone else on Serenity breaks orders to follow her to River learning to fly the shuttle after reading the manual for 45 minutes. (It took that long because there were mistakes.) In addition, he had great touches with memories of the Mal's relationship with Sakaya (Then Colonel Bursa), Jayne's clueless inner dialogue, even the chapter titles: My Own Kind of Past, My Own Kind of Clever. Yes, Steven's certain applied his own kind of clever to my favorite show.

Hope he has more missions in mind for the crew of Serenity.

My Own Kind of Freedom: A Firefly Novel By Steven Brust

I'm a big Firefly fan, so this week (for no particular reason), I'm highlighting the very cool free novel by Steven Brust, My Own Kind of Freedom.

Since it's published under Common license, there's not fancy cover and very little advertising except through the fan net. I found this summary on Serenity Stuff:

While transporting cut maple to Hera, Mal realizes he’s not quite himself; asking Wash dumb questions, being nice to Jayne. Clearly something is up. Could be because Inara’s gone, could be because this job is taking them back to where he led the fight in the last, losing battle of the war, could be something else. But he’s distracted and jumpy. Zoe is edgy because Mal’s jumpy. Kaylee is worried because of Mal and Zoe. Jayne is impatient to get some time for himself to get drunk and sexed. And River is hearing from ghosts, some more solid than others…

Thursday, I'll post my review. In the meantime, if you're a Firefly fan, you can get the novel here.

Cinco de Mayo: What's Everybody Celebrating? by Don Miles

Under the orders of French Emperor Napoleon III, French troops arrive in Mexico in 1861 with a dual purpose: to conquer Mexico and to help the Confederacy win its war against the United States. As President Benito Juárez suspends payment of Mexico’s foreign debts, the French drop their façade of debt negotiations and head for Puebla, where they are soundly defeated in their attempt to capture the city.

The French withdraw from their stunning setback and spend the summer of 1862 nursing their wounds and awaiting reinforcements in Orizaba. This gives the Mexicans ample time to highly fortify Puebla against a future attack. During the spring of 1863, French troops head for Puebla and Mexico City in what they hope will be a pair of easy victories.

Juárez and his government flee Mexico City rather than trying to defend the capital against overwhelming odds. The French make their grand entrance and immediately encounter problems with the Catholic Church. Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, asked by the French to become emperor of Mexico, will not accept the throne without a “popular” vote from the people.

When the American Civil War ends in 1865, generals and high-ranking officials from the former Confederate government drift into Mexico. General Ulysses S. Grant’s U.S. Army is now free to stage maneuvers along the border, setting off panic in Mexico City and Paris. Grant’s move prompts Napoleon III to cut his losses and pull his troops out. Now, it’s only a matter of time before Mexican forces retake the country …

Review: Behold Your Mother by Heidi Hess Saxton

Heidi Hess Saxton said that as a convert to Catholicism, one of the most difficult things for her to understand was praying to Mary. Why not just talk to Jesus himself? Her experiences as a mother of adopted children, however, gave her insights into this reluctance to accept an adoptive mother and helped her overcome her own hesitations.

In Behold Your Mother: Mary Stories and Reflections from a Catholic Convert, Heidi shares three of those experiences--once when she asked Mary for a small favor, once when she herself was the answer to that favor, and once when a difficult time with her children brought her an epiphany about our relationship with the Blessed Mother.

I have not had the beautiful and touching experiences she had when praying to Mary--nor the difficult time waiting patiently for her new children to learn to trust and love her. However, I can certainly identify with how her experiences a mom led her to understand the Divine Mother. In my case, I learned it while "meditating" on the common call in my household: "Mom! Would you tell (sibling) to (do this, stop that, give me this..)" Mothers are natural intercessors, and Jesus gave us Mary as Mother, with all the roles that implies.

Heidi examines those many roles--from the Intended of Joseph to the Queen of Peace, in the 48 meditations that follow her three stories about her experiences with Mary. Each begins with a bit of Scripture or legend about Mary, followed by a meditation in verse and a prayer to her or to a saint important to her role. These are beautifully done, but more than that, they are heartfelt. A few brought tears to my eyes. I read through the first time quickly, but I intend to go back over these, one a day, and spend a few minutes giving my love to the Mother of God.

This is a terrific book for someone wanting to strengthen their relationship with Mary, our Mother or to learn more about her life and her roles, past and present, and what they mean for us today.

Behold Your Mother by Heidi Hess Saxton

"Behold Your Mother" is a collection of beautiful meditations on the lives of Mary and Jesus with a special emphasis on Mary's role as mother of us all. Even those who are new to a relationship with our heavenly mother will be drawn in by Heidi's charming personal stories and eloquent prose. This book is both a lesson in Marian spirituality and a simple prayer book, but mostly it is a love poem from a faithful daughter to her mama. A treasure.

CSFF Presents: On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by Andrew Peterson

I've joined the Christian Sci-Fi Fantasy Review Blog. I don't do a lot of reviews, but I will post something once a month. Follow the links below for actual reviews.

Playwright Peterson (Behold the Lamb of God) spins a whimsical fantasy novel that will appeal to both adult and YA readers. When the three Igiby siblings find a mysterious map, they embark on an adventure to discover family secrets about the father they never knew and a hidden treasure that many have long desired to find. Leeli, the youngest, can sing with a beauty that captivates dragons; Tink, the middle sibling, has the makings of a king; and Janner, the eldest, possesses a bravery that will protect them all. But the children's curiosity get the entire Igiby family into trouble with the Fangs of Dang—frightening, scaly-skinned, lizard creatures that drip venom—who have ruled the land of Scree since the Great War. Soon, the Igibys are scrambling for their lives. Peterson's style is lighthearted and funny, but following the Igibys' story requires patience and attention to detail and character so as not to get lost. The sheer amount of names, places, creatures and history Peterson invents will frustrate some readers—it is so complicated that he inserts explanatory historical footnotes throughout (though many are amusing).

Interview with Raquel Soto

What inspired you to write this book?

I was reading Steven Scott's book, The Richest Man Who Ever Lived: King Solomon's Secrets to Success, Wealth, and Happiness in early 2007. I'm not sure how many of your readers know his story, but it goes something like this: Steven had lost like 10 jobs in five years. Desperate to figure out what he was doing wrong, he asked his friend Gary Smalley (yes, THAT Gary Smalley) for advise. Gary's advice: read the book of Proverbs everyday for five years (since today is the 17th, read chapter 17, tomorrow the 18th, and so on and so forth). He encouraged Steven if he did that, he would be a millionaire by the end of the five years. It took Steven three. During the course of his journey and reading Proverbs, he found why some things worked out for him and why some things didn't. It began to open his eyes to those secrets he was missing. It changed his whole life and he became a better person because of it.

I got to the end of the book and thought, 'Where's the rest?' It was a wonderful read. I didn't know what I was thinking while I was reading it. I kept looking forward to a reading plan on how to implement his suggestion.

While this was a great book, I needed something more. I'm one of those get-motivated-for-about-two-weeks kind of person. If you give me a system, something easy I can follow, I can work it and get good at it. If you just tell me: 'Exercise three times a week,' I'm going to look back at you and say, 'But how and what?' I tried reading it (Proverbs) on my own but it just wasn't sinking in the way I wanted it to. Then, in prayer one day, I got the idea for the book for myself since I couldn't find an accompanying workbook for Steven's book. A few days later, I felt impressed that if I wanted and needed this for myself, others might need it to.

What challenges did you have writing it?

One challenge was in not reusing a power verse. Some of the ones I wanted to use I didn't even get the chance to write on. None of the verses are repeated in the 365 days. Some of them I could have expanded over a few pages, but I wanted to remain consistent. Every day corresponds to the day of the month. Since today is March 17th, you would go to the March 17th page and the power verse of the day would come from the 17th chapter of Proverbs. I was able to overcome this challenge by using a grid I created in Excel. This way, I could see what I wrote on for all the days marked the 17th without 'reusing' a power verse.

The more difficult challenge was just finishing it. I guess it was finished faster than many books. I started in March of 2007 and finished in November. Nine months seemed long to me. But sometimes that's how long it takes to birth something.

What's your favorite verse/chapter/section and why?

If I had to pick something, I would pick the journaling section. Every page ends with a question applying the power verse to your daily life and how you can implement it. I love that idea because it causes you to really think about what you read and creates a connection between the power verse and the reader. Why read something that is suppose to change your life then forget it the next day? That's why the journaling section on each page is important. It helps to solidify what you just read into your subconscious so that you can dig it out later when you need it.

What's next for you?
There is a series of books I will be writing that has to do with taking you from the minimum to maximum in any area of your life. I’m so passionate about people doing what they were created to do. If everyone would learn how to free themselves up so that they can fulfill those dreams that seem so far out of reach, they and everyone around them would be so much happier. God purposefully puts these out-of-reach dreams in us so that we could partner with Him to make them come to pass. That’s the exciting part for me: helping someone realize they aren’t crazy and that they can do it because God is for them, not against them.

Sometimes all an eagle needs is a little push, and I'm good at that part.

REVIEW: Juana Meets Gabriel, the Small Business Angel by Daphne Nowell

Juana doesn't want the future suggested in her fairy tales; rather than having a handsome prince to fulfill her every wish, she wants to make her own dreams come true. The Business Angel Gabriel comes and gives her some basic information about learning about businesses. She starts a dog grooming business, and in the end, gets both the satisfaction of a job well done on her own--and the handsome prince she meets when he brings his dog to her for grooming.

Written by Daphne Nowell, the book is illustrated by her mother Esther Nowell. Her artwork is very clean and eye catching. I especially love Juana's face.

I liked the premise of this book and I cheered when I read "she wanted to be proud of doing great things on her own. She wanted to be happy even when there were no handsome princes around." Certainly that’s the message most of us mothers want our daughters to learn. I also appreciated how, once she had achieved independent happiness, she got to have her prince as well. As a happily married woman who left a career as an Air Force officer to have children and begin freelance writing, I applaud the idea of being able to have both. Frankly, I see that as reality should be.

I was disappointed with a three things, however:
* Juana, who doesn't believe in fairy tales, nonetheless calls on "the universe" to help her, because "Well, it's common knowledge that when you ask the universe how to do something, you will quickly get answers." (Quote from book) The angel comes not from God or even heaven, but "the Universe." Religious implications aside, it's a confusing mix of metaphors.

* With all the fabulous opportunities available (and I won't say "to women" because we should be past that now), Nowell's angel suggests service-oriented blue-collar work--dog grooming, check cashing store, coin laundry and day spa--as small businesses Juana might start. These are important businesses, but I would have liked to see a more balanced mix, with some technical/computer fields--web design, computer repair, even accounting or electrical repair. The book is to encourage girls to break female stereotypes, after all. (It might have been nice for Gabriel to suggest getting a college degree, too.)

* I had a hard time determining Juana's age--was she a young girl? Was she grown up in the end? (She looks the same throughout--even to her dress.) That made it hard for me to put Gabriel's advice to her in a proper context. "Learn about these businesses by...taking classes and ...volunteering to work (at a business) for free" is beyond the abilities of the suggested age group, 4- to 9-year-olds. However, if Juana is old enough to take this advice and "soon open" her own business, she probably should have already known to "read books (about businesses) and (research) on the Internet."

My daughter is 12 now, so I gave the book to my neighbor to read with her 7-year old daughter. The mother thought the whole "universe" concept in confusing when combined with angels and was not impressed with the choice of careers. She loved the ending, however. The daughter did not like Gabriel in a business suit, though she liked the dogs. She described the book as "Juana grows up and gets a job." Neither considered this a book to they would have picked up on their own or recommended to friends.

This book is message-heavy and plot-light, so while I wouldn't consider this a bedtime-story book, I think Juana Meets Gabriel has a place in a classroom setting. Elementary school teachers and girls' club leaders for younger ages might consider using this book as a way to introduce the idea of careers and begin discussion.

Interview with Marvin Zimmerman

Why did I write The Ovum Factor?

It was a story that came to me in a dream ten years ago and its message has only grown in importance with the advance of climate change and ecological destruction all around us.

What was my favorite part of writing this book?

The Ovum Factor
is an eco-thriller, pulsating with risks and dilemmas for the young protagonist, David Rose. Putting his story into words allowed me to live through all the drama and adventure along the way.

What was most difficult?

Deciding how the love interest between David and beautiful Chinese biochemist, Emily Zhang, would resolve itself.

What is the next thing I want readers to know about my work?

My novels will aim to spin compelling tales of love and intrigue, against the backdrop of the major issue facing humanity today - our very survival in the face of ongoing environmental degradation.

What is next for me?

My second novel - The Last Noble Truth - is just about finished and I hope to have it published before the end of this year.

The Ovum Factor by Marvin Zimmerman

Destruction of Earth's ecology threatens the survival of humanity. With time ticking away, a clandestine think tank of scientists and world leaders has identified our last hope - the controversial research of a Nobel Prize - winning professor aimed at unleashing the power of a unique molecule that can alter the course of human history.

When David Rose, a young investment banker from New York, is assigned to evaluate the professor's research, he soon becomes swept up in a whirlwind of international espionage, assassination, and sabotage. David finds himself on a journey that takes him to the unexplored depths of the Amazon in order to fulfill two ancient prophecies for saving mankind and at the same time to realize his own destiny.

From New York to Califonia, from China to the slums of Rio de Janerio, and into the Amazon, the search for the mysterious source of this rare molecule will take you into the heart of the unknown and unseen forces of nature.

READ THE EXCERPT

The only sound came from the muted ticking of the alarm clock on the night table.
David Rose opened bleary eyes and reached over to scan its face. Not even 5:00. Yet he knew he would not be sleeping any longer. His dreams had been filled with all sorts of
unfamiliar images and faces, none of which he could now recall. He had no desire to return to that chaos.

He lay back, staring blankly at the ceiling and feeling the cooling sensation as the perspiration from his dream evaporated into the dry air of his Manhattan bedroom. Many unrelated thoughts drifted through his mind. But all brought him back to the same basic question. What am I doing with my life?

That question had begun haunting him in recent weeks. He was blessed with all the trappings that defined success in his job as an investment banker. Yet he was far from satisfied. Something important was missing.

He had always imagined a different life for himself. He was a dreamer who wanted to change the world by helping shape the minds of the next generation. This would have made a career in education his obvious choice. But the influence of family had caused him to follow a much different course—one more likely to bring a handsome income. And with his combination of intelligence and intuition, he had excelled at it, in spite of the poor fit with his real aspirations.

While he was reflecting on how life might have been different had he only resisted these external pressures, an unfamiliar feeling began to take hold. It was almost as if some outside force were pulling him from the bed and compelling him to begin his usual morning ritual. He chose to comply even though this would mean arriving at the office much sooner than normal.

He stumbled out of bed and entered the shower, leaving the bright bathroom lights off to avoid the uncomfortable transition from the night. The jets of water cascading over his face and running down his long, lean body provided welcome relief from the tension accumulated in his dream. The shower was a place he could let his mind wander wherever it chose to take him.

Suddenly, standing there in the dark, the warm water pouring over his body, he felt a powerful sense of reverse déjà vu. Not that he had experienced this moment in the past but that he would soon experience it again and in a place far away.

He dressed quickly in his usual light shirt and conservative dark suit. He then decided to skip breakfast to keep his momentum.

As he closed the door of his apartment that cold January morning, David Rose could never have foreseen what destiny had planned for him. He was about to embark on a great adventure that could affect all humanity—an adventure whose origins had already begun seven decades earlier in a village in southern China.
